Basics 2

The Article

For nouns, these are mostly words for people, plants or other things that you can see, touch or feel and they are used with the article “the” (the child, the apple, the fear, the dog).

In the English language the article the has always the same form: the. Not so in the German language. The article depends on the gender (male, female or neutral) of the noun, to which the article belongs to.

the man - der Mann. The arcticle "der" shows that the noun "Mann" is male.
the woman - die Frau. The arcticle "die" shows that the noun "Frau" is female.
the car - das Auto. The arcticle "das" shows that the noun "Auto" is neutral.

But there is no rule, that only male persons are male nouns and female persons are female nouns. Many more nouns also are male or female. And many nouns are neutral. That's why there is no help - you must learn the article always together with the noun.

the letter - der Brief (male)
the stone - der Stein (male)
the bag - die Tasche (female)
the candle - die Kerze (female)
the cellphone - das Handy (neutral)
the charger - das Ladegerät (neutral)
